Lunching in the Loft District – Everest Cafe

Oh how I love curry, so many varieties and so many ways to cook with it.

Determined to make it somewhere other than Qdoba for lunch, I finally made it to one that has been on my to-eat list for almost a year.  Everest Cafe is a buffet place and while I run screaming from Chinese buffets and scowl at Old Country Buffet and Golden Corral (really, need to make it feel more like you are a horse eating from a trough?), I do enjoy a buffet when it is ethnic food because I can try many dishes in small quantities.

Everest serves Nepalese, Korean and Indian food with the mission of serving healthy, delicious and nutritious meals.  They buy fresh, organic vegetables every day.  It was so good and had many vegan options with lots of variety.  I will take anything with bell peppers and cauliflower – two of my favorites.  My favorite was the vegetable pakoras, the best I have ever had, but I loved everything. Top-notch.

The place has an unassuming front and that’s what kept me away for a while, but when I came to the realization that the best Thai food is normally found in otherwise run-down strip malls, I realized I needed to go in and try it.  They have another location in The Grove neighborhood that has more hours and non-buffet dinner service if  that is more what you are going for.

Fiona Apple at the Peabody Opera House

For all the early 80s babies, this one’s for you.

Remember when we used to come home from high school, flip to MTV and watch Carson Daly give us the rundown of the Top 10 best music videos on TRL?

Remember this one?

Ahh, those were the good ole days…before people started criticizing her and calling her crazy because of this:

But guess what guys? Just like the Backstreet Boys…she’s back…in St. Louis that is, performing this weekend at the Peabody Opera House. The same place that the amazingly talented Nicki Minaj will be performing in just 2 weeks!

She will be promoting her new album: The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do. (Yes, that’s really the album’s title).

The album was released June 19th and Fiona compared it to an open wound, saying: “The Idler Wheel isn’t always pretty, but it pulses with life, brutal and true.”

Hey, I didn’t say she wasn’t strange, but she’s an artist so it’s to be expected. And if you remember Fiona songs from back in the day and you listen to a couple of her new songs including Anything We Want, you will agree, she still has that crazy unique voice that is truly one-of-a-kind.

Tickets are available at Ticketmaster, Stubhub, all the usual places. Get a ticket, then go grab a delicious burger at Hamburger Mary’s or Bailey’s Range, then head on over to the Peabody Opera House this Saturday, July 14th at 7:30pm and enjoy a great Fiona show.

Lunching in the Loft District – Bailey’s Range

I’m not getting out for a good sit down lunch as often as I’d like with the busy season at work and staples that I love to eat again and again, but I will make more of an effort.  There are still so many places to try.

I’d heard nothing but good things about Bailey’s Range and their outside picnic tables.  Plus, their involvement in the downtown community beckoned me to give them a try.  Once inside the place is visual overload.  I love the wall of old windows that separates the kitchen from the main restaurant, the milk can lights, and in the center of their long, thin dining establishment; a huge community table.

On to the food: They have two specialties and focus almost exclusively on them; burgers and shakes.  The burgers are insane in variety and flavor. For example: Buzzed – an espresso rubbed burger topped with apples, diced onions, bacon and blue cheese or try Morocco – Moroccan spiced lamb, caramelized onion chutney, feta and arugula.  I had the veggie burger topped with apple jalapeno salsa on a vegan pretzel bun. YUM!  Each week they have a burger battle. The one that gets ordered more stays on to fight another week.

I paired my burger with one of the absolutely, totally amazing selection of sodas.  Most are made with real cane sugar.  They have pretty much anything you could think of, divided on the menu by flavor: Root Beer, Lemon Lime, Ginger, Cola… it goes on and on. I plan to make it back for dinner one of these nights to try out the Boozy Lemonade I saw on the menu. They also have an extensive list of bottled beers.

They have hand-made ice cream that is scooped or made into shakes, and while it looks amazing, I must admit I didn’t try it.  I didn’t see any dairy free options but I may have missed them based on the fact that they have vegan chocolate sauce, and why would anyone put vegan chocolate on top of traditional ice cream?

These are the same owners as Bailey’s Chocolate Bar in Lafayette Square. So if you like that, try this out for sure.  I give this place high marks for atmosphere and the food.

Lunching in the Loft District – Mr. Curry’s Indian Buffet

It’s been awhile since my last review, so for those who aren’t familiar with my Lunching in the Loft District series, check out my previous reviews. Now on to today’s review: Mr. Curry’s Indian Buffet

Ok, this one is seriously for lunch only.  The hours are Monday – Friday from 11:00am – 1:30pm.  While that may seem really restrictive, I kind of like the idea that the food could sit out on the buffet the entire time they are open and still be considered relatively fresh.

Mr. Curry’s is a small place located across from Macy’s on Olive.  They have a pretty good selection although I went on Tuesday, which is advertised as Vegan Day, and most of the options were still for carnivores.   The naan was vegan which can be hard to find so that is a definite plus to those wanting vegan options.  It wasn’t very crowded, though it was 1:00pm which is on the later side for lunch down here.

I enjoyed it. I can’t say it was outstanding but it did fill the craving for Indian food that I had been having all morning.  Buffet plus drink was $9.95 which isn’t bad though I would like to eat on a real plate instead of styrofoam (maybe I’m just picky).

They also have a fine dining location in Edwardsville which is the only Indian food in Edwardsville that I am aware of.  I won’t say anything about that location. If you are local to Edwardsville you must try this yourself with no warning as to what to expect, and by the way, the food is good there.

Lunching in the Loft District-Sen Thai

Yummy Thai food makes me happy.  I love some veggies in coconut milk and Thai curry over a pretty bed of rice.  The greatest Thai I have ever had was in a strip mall in Boulder, Colorado.  The best Thai food I’ve had in St. Louis is honestly King and I on Grand.

A few weeks ago my husband came by my office for lunch. I’d been saving Sen Thai downtown for just this occasion.  I enjoyed it, but I can’t say I was wowed.  The food was good, but not amazing. My tongue did not sing, there was no happy dance.  It was really crowded, which tells me that they are well liked.  It was loud.  Weeks later that is the thing that I remember the most…it was really loud. I like to be able to hold a conversation with the person I am dining with without “what?,” “what was that” over and over again.

That being said, I do wonder if the food tasted better in Boulder because I had lower expectations for a tiny strip mall joint than I did for a crowded downtown hotspot.

Thai and Indian are my favorites, I’d love to try every single one in St. Louis! If you know of one you think will wow me, I’d love to hear about it!

Caruso’s Deli-Lunching in the Loft District

The first few times I walked down Washington I passed this place right up, located just to the east of Fitness Factory with a really small storefront it is easy to do, but one day I was walking back and there was a man standing outside and he said hello.  He seemed so genuinely friendly that it made me look at what he was standing in front of.  It was Caruso’s Deli and based on my research that was Jerry Caruso. (They recently installed an awning making it easier to find).  I made a mental note that I would try this place out and so I did.

This is the place I will go time and time again once my adventures in eating up and down Washington Ave are all over.  I have been told that this place is new; a few things juggled around and Caruso’s landed at 1312 Washington Ave.  These are the friendliest people I have every met in any eating establishment EVER!!  With total sincerity, they thank you for coming in, smile while they take your order and ask you how your day is going.  There are always people sitting outside and they seem to know all of the locals.  It was quick, it was delicious and I loved having a pasta salad as my side instead of chips.

They sell meats etc. and sandwiches and salads pre-packaged and ready to go or you can order off their menu and the sandwich is made just for you.  I heart the veggie sandwich with fresh avocado……..YUMMY!!!  If you come to have lunch with me there is a very very good chance that we will walk down a block and eat here!!  They do deliver for lunch but the hours are limited and there is a delivery fee, totally worth it!!
