Bluesweek 2012

When you think music in St. Louis, you immediately think Blues. For the next 9 days we are going to celebrate that very music that makes our city, with the 3rd annual Bluesweek festivities, from May 19 through May 27.

Festivities kick off with the Crown Royal Soulard Blues Cruise on Saturday, May 19th from 9:00pm – 1:00am. This event includes 9 Soulard hot spots that are hosting some of the best musicians in the St. Louis area.  You can buy your $10 wristband (cash only) at any of the participating venues listed below.  You must be 21 and the shuttles will be running every 20 minutes between locations.

Soulard venues include: 1860′s Saloon, Hammerstone’s, The Old Rock House, Joanie’s Pizzeria, Great Grizzly Bear, Nadine’s Gin Joint, The Shanti, Johnny’s, and BB’s Jazz, Blues, & Soups. Check the link above for the great musicians performing.

 

All-star Blues Brunch

When: Sunday, May 20th

Location: The Great Grizzly Bear

Time: 10:00am – 2:00pm

Admission: $15 at the door includes brunch and an all-star jam session.  Make sure to come early and get your spot!

 

Pearl Vodka St. Louis Blues Awards – This event gives recognition to St. Louis musicians who have made an impact in St. Louis with their contribution to the Blues community.

Date: Thursday, May 24th

Location: BB’s Jazz, Blues and Soups

Time: 7:30 Cocktails – 8:30 Awards – 9:30 Annie Raines, Rich McDonough, & Rough Grooves

Cost: $5 with 2 complimentary beverages and light appetizers

 

Now for another fun-filled Blues weekend!  The Mid America Chevy Dealers’ Bluesweek Festival.  The festival will host 40+ bands and tons of food and drink! Make sure to bring a chair and/or blanket, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a good attitude with a hunger for some great Blues, Brews, and BBQ! Click here for a full schedule of music.

MayFest St. Louis

Let the music festivals Begin!  This weekend kicks off the start of the awesome outdoor Summer festivals that St. Louis is well known for, with MayFest, a 3 day music festival in downtown’s BallPark Village next to Busch Stadium, including art exhibits, food trucks and….a crawfish and shrimp boil!

Oh, and by the way, tickets are only $5!

So here’s the low down:

When:  Friday, May 18 – Sunday, May 20

Times: 4 to 11:30pm on Friday

The festival kicks off with a special Friday Happy Hour starting at 4pm with Dr Zhivegas performing from 5 to 6:30pm. Additionally, there will be food trucks, and a cocktail station with mojitos, margaritas, sangria and other delicious adult beverages. You can also purchase tickets for the Electric Lot Party Tent for $15, where, from 6-11pm, you will experience performances from international DJs including: DJ Z-Trip, Matt Darey, Cypher and Mister Mac

11am to 11:30pm on Saturday: A whole day of music including some great classic rock legends, delicious festival food like turkey legs and brats along with a Louisiana style crawfish and shrimp boil, and other delicious Cajun food from Molly’s in Soulard, entertainment from Belle of the Ball Amy Palmer, and other fun vendor exhibits like: jewelry from Bellestyle Bijoux, vintage clothing from Miss Ohio Vintage and more!

Cost: $5 for general admission or you can purchase a VIP Ticket for $60 which gets you unlimited beer and cocktails, unlimited Creole buffet, VIP parking and VIP seating in front of the main stage

What to bring: A blanket or lawn chair and cool, comfortable clothes (it’s supposed to be in the high 80s this weekend)

What not to bring: A cooler, outside food or drinks, pets, bicycles or skateboards, and anything that would generally not be accepted in a public venue.

If you’re like me and you don’t have any friends who are excited about going, but you want to go, join me while also supporting a great cause by volunteering to serve beer with What’s Up Magazine on Saturday from 10am to 5 pm or 5pm to 10pm. If they get enough volunteers, they can raise over $2,000 for their organization, which helps homeless and economically disadvantaged people by offering transitional employment. Soulard Pub Crawl This Saturday

This Saturday, a great friend of mine is putting on her annual pub crawl to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The crawl, which has been going since 2006, had 70 participants and raised $1,600 last year. The crawl will again be through the streets of Soulard with a new addition or two to the route this year. Cost is $10 and the first 60 will get a shirt.

Here’s the route:

One of the coolest parts of this crawl, year after year, is the great looking shirt. Too often, I see pub crawls go around with shirts that look almost worse than the ones that athletes pull on after they win a championship. These crawl shirts are better than this, this  and even this.

The crawl will start at iTap  at 7pm on Saturday. That’s where you will register and get your wristband (and shirt if you’re lucky). Between 7 and 8, you should enjoy beer  at either iTap or Epic next door. Epic will be offering a variety of food specials to give the participants some fuel for the night ahead.

At 8, the crawl will go to Molly’s for an hour.  Between 9p and Midnight, the crawl will spend time at Hammerstone’s, Shanti and 1860s, each for an hour.

At Midnight, crawl participants will parade their way to Llywelyn’s to finish out the night.

Epic has also been gracious enough to extend their specials until the end of the night to the group for late night dining.

All of the participating establishments will be offering specials to crawl participants. A representative from Boulevard Brewing Company will be following the crawl around getting participants specials at the various bars and handing out other goodies.

Biking St. Louis Style

May is bike month and for those of you who are finally getting used to the weather (I can tell that I am not yet, as I thought I was going to die of heat stroke last weekend!), this weekend is the perfect weekend to get out and enjoy a bike ride or be a spectator at one of the coolest biking events St. Louis has to offer!

The Missouri Professional Bicycling Series (aka MO PRO) is hosting their 3-day competitive bicycling event this weekend, May 11-13th. A different race will take place each day in a different St. Louis neighborhood and will offer all sorts of festivities in addition to the races, including great handmade artwork featured by ARTCRANK St. Louis.

Friday, May 11th

The Races: The Loop de Loop Grand Prix in University City from 3:30pm to 10pm. You can watch the races  from one of the Michelob Ultra ringside party areas, head over to Fitz’s for their Turn 4 Viewing Party, or watch the racers cross the finish line at The Melting Pot or in Cicero’s beer garden.

ARTCRANK festivities: Kicks off the start of their weekend festivities at Atomic Cowboy at 5pm selling handmade, signed, bicycle themed posters by 30 local artists for $40 each. Additionally, they’ve teamed up with Widmer Brothers Brewing to sell custom ARTCRANK pint glasses for $5. All proceeds benefit BicycleWORKS to help support their program which gives inner city children the chance to earn a free bicycle. Also, everyone who buys one of these glasses gets a $1 pour at Atomic Cowboy.

Also, check out SpokedSTL’s Goldsprint fun races at The Handlebar from 8:30pm to 10pm.

Saturday, May 12

The featured race: The NCC Tour de Grove in The Grove from 9:40am to 5:30pm. This race is part of the prestigious USA Cycling National Criterium Calendar and the USA Crits Championship Series, which includes some of the fastest professional male and female cyclists in the United States. (There will also be a 5K starting at 9am)

Race Festivities:  I can’t even list all of the awesome festivities The Grove will be offering on Saturday: from Randy’s Recycled Cycles Pig Roast starting at 9am, live entertainment from The Gramophone’s DJs from 1-4pm and The Swamp Daddies from 7-10pm, skateboarding and bicycle skill exhibition contests starting at 7pm, post race party at Atmoic Cowboy starting at 9pm with special guest J Pow, and the London Calling dance party at The Gramophone starting at 10:30pm. These are honestly only a few of the festivities happening on Saturday. You must check out the Tour de Grove website to see about the drag races hosted by Big Shark, skateboard demos with No Coast Skateboards, free Yoga and great drink specials happening at various bars throughout The Grove.

 

Sunday, May 13

The Races: Dutchtown Classic Pro Cycling Series in South St. Louis from 9am to 6pm.

The festivities: There will  be a community bike ride for anyone to attend from 8:30-10am courtesy of MoBikeFed. Registration begins at 7:30am. Cost is $30 in advance or $35 day of and includes a 1 year MoBikeFed membership or renewal. Additionally, ARTCRANK will be at Atomic Cowboy from 5-9pm selling their handmade artwork and custom pint glasses.

There is also a South Grand Mother’s Day family bike ride event taking place from 9am-2pm. Ride around Tower Grove Park with the family, take a leisurely ride through historic neighborhoods and stop at the Compton Hill Water Tower, climb to the top and enjoy the best view in the city. Cost of ride is $8 except moms and children under 10 ride FREE.

Tips: If you’re coming to the Tour de Grove festivities as a spectator, make sure to bring lawn chairs, plenty of water, comfortable and cool clothing, and your cheering voice.

To Drink or to Run…that is the question

So obviously this Saturday is Cinco de Mayo and if there’s one thing St. Louis loves, it’s celebrating (i.e. drinking). However, as many fun holiday celebrations and beer tastings as there are, there are just as many bike rides and marathons here. So if drinking isn’t on your mind this weekend, try one of the several races happening in St. Louis this weekend.

Saturday, May 5th

R.U.S.H is a race this Saturday, May 5th in St. Charles. It’s sponsored by The Sparrow’s Nest Maternity Home and Bridgeway Behavioral Health. The race begins at Frontier Park at 9am and you run through the beautiful Katy Trails. The entry fee is $30 per person and includes a t-shirt and goodie bag. You can register at Big River Running today until 8pm or tomorrow before the race. Prizes will be awarded for the Top 3 finishers in each age group.

6th annual Run for their Lives 5K is also this Saturday, May 5th beginning at the SLU Clocktower Plaza (West Pine and Spring). It benefits Pregnant and Parenting Student Assistance fund. Registration opens at 8am with the race starting at 9am. You can register online through today for $15 or register at the race for $20. All ages are welcome. There will be carnival games, attendance prizes, raffles and medals for the Top 3 finishers.

Walk Run n Roll is in Creve Coeur Park at the Tremayne Shelter. Check-in is at 9am with a Fun Run and 1 Mile Walk beginning at 10am. This event benefits people with developmental disabilities in St. Louis, St. Charles and surrounding areas. Entry fee is $30 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. There will be a resource and health fair along with entertainment and fun activities until 1:00pm.

Ruckus St. Louis at the GCS Ballpark in Sauget, IL. You can choose between a 2 mile or 4 mile ruckus. This isn’t just a race, it’s a full on obstacle course with bars and climbing and people are wearing gloves and look like they were running through the mud kind of event. All participants receive a Ruckus Tech t-shirt and medal. Only the Top 10% qualify to move on to the Ruckus Champions Heat for the chance to win the Golden Helmet. You can still register on race day for $85 for the 2 mile Ruckus Heater or $105 for the 4 mile Ruckus Challenge. While this is out of my league, it sounds like fun to watch!

Sunday, May 6th

Now the way I see it is you can still participate in the Cinco de Mayo festivities on Saturday, and then burn all those calories and tequila shots off on Sunday with a good, long run, and there are plenty of races on Sunday to help you out with that:

Run For Sight begins downtown at Union Station at 8:30am on Sunday morning. It benefits children with visual impairments. There is a 5K run or a 2 Mile Fun Walk. Registration begins at 7am at Union Station. It’s $25 for adults or $15 for children 12 and under. You can still register online as well and take part in the Fit and Fun Day packet pick up activities at the St. Louis Galleria tomorrow from 10am to 3pm. There will be massages, exercise shoe consultations, art projects and more.

2nd Annual Go Green Clayton 5K promoting healthy living and community pride kicks off at Centene Stadium in Gay Field. Registration is at 7:30am. There is a 5K Run starting at 8:30am or a 1/2 Mile Fun Run (for children 5-18 yrs old) starting at 9:30am. The cost is $25 for adults and $17 for ages 5-18 (free for children under 4) for the 5K and $5 for the Fun Run.

International Barefoot Running Day event is Sunday at 1:00pm. Meet at the Steinberg Ice Skating Rink parking lot. You run barefoot! It’s a free event and there is no registration, just show up, run for as long as you can (5K or less) barefoot and have fun. If you have any questions before hand, contact the guy in charge. He will also be holding a barefoot running clinic at 12:30pm before the race in case you have questions.

St. Louis Crisis Nursery’s Healthy 5K Fun Run and 1 Mile Walk is Sunday at 10am at the John Burroughs School in Ladue. Entry fee is $20. Registration and packet pick up is at 9am. T-shirts will be awarded to the first 200 entries.

St. Louis Microfest 2012

This weekend, the best beer city (in my opinion anyway) is hosting our 17th annual Microfest in Forest Park at the Upper Muny parking lot.  St. Louis is known for our Budweiser but we are also home to a ton of great local breweries. This is your chance to check them out in addition to dozens of other craft and international beers during this 2-day event.  Here is the breakdown:

Friday evening - May 4th (Session I), will feature international beers

Saturday afternoon - May 5th (Session II) beer from American microbreweries.

Saturday evening - May 5th (Session III) will be craft and international beers.

All the VIP tickets have been sold, however, you can still purchase general admission Tickets (via this link or at the event).  Online pre-sale tickets are only available until midnight tonight, otherwise you will have to pay an increased fee at the box office the day of the event – so get them now.  A general admission ticket will get you tastes from over 75 breweries and 100 international and craft brews, a tasting glass, access to cooking demonstrations and brewing discussions in the Demo Tent, live music, silent auction items for bid, and food available for purchase.  Food vendors include Henrick’s BBQ, Michelle C Catering & Events, Pointer’s Market, and Steamroller Bagel and Deli.
